Listed below are
the various Teen Court roles & responsibilities. Please check all
the roles you would consider serving as, at this time. Hopefully, with more
training and experience, you’ll desire
to participate in more than one capacity.
JUROR Jurors listen to
the case presentation & determine the disciplinary sanctions awarded.
BAILIFF Bailiffs arrive early to assist the
Coordinator with sign-ins & traffic flow; escort assigned
Jurors into
courtroom per trial & announce both Court opening and Judge’s arrival;
responsible for
providing appropriate forms to jury & Judge, and maintain order in Court.
PROSECUTOR Prosecutors
attend any additional training required; represent State’s interest during the
proceedings; arrive
early to review cases; suggest appropriate sentences for assigned cases.
DEFENSE Defense attorneys
attend any additional training required; represent Defendants in
ATTORNEY assigned cases; confer with defendants
during week prior to Court; arrive early to meet
with defendant and
to complete paperwork prior to Court; suggest appropriate sentences
for assigned cases.
*NOTE: Both prosecuting and
defense attorneys will receive training from an attorney and will have guidance
in interviewing the defendants and preparing case strategy, on Trial nights,
prior to Court.
Before becoming
active in Sussex Teen Court proceedings, ALL TEEN COURT VOLUNTEER APPLICANTS
must complete the
required training. Furthermore, they will carry out the Judge’s instructions,
insure confidentiality of all
Court hearings and
related discussions, treat ALL participants with RESPECT, and
follow all Teen Court rules for
dress code,
professionalism, etc. Sussex Teen Court sessions will begin at 6:00 p.m.,
in Georgetown, at Sussex County
Family Court. Volunteers are
responsible for providing their own transportation.
Applicant
Statement: I
have read the above duties, and I understand the responsibilities of serving in
Sussex Teen Court.
Additionally, I
understand that there will be two training cycles offered per academic year,
generally one in October
and one in March.
Therefore, if my application is received after the March session,
I will not be come an active volunteer until completion of the next available
training in October.
